World War II lasted from 1939 to 1945 and involved all the great world powers devided into two opposing sides. It was the most widespread ever with more than 100 million military personnel involoved. It started when Hitler and the Nazis started going against the Treaty of Versailles which was a peace treaty signed at the end of World War I. Then came the very sad history of the Holocaust. The Nazis and their racist government killed between 11 million and 17 million Jews, homosexuals, Jehovah's Witnesses and other political and religous opponents. The Axis powers had gone crazy and started what they thought was their journey to world domintation they had invaded and controled almost all of Europe. The only countries they didn't control in Europe were the United Kingdom, Spain, Switzerland, and Swedan. Meanwhile, sitting confortably across the Atlantic just trying to stay out of the fight, the U.S. wanted to stay isolated. Then Japan bombed Pearl Harbor. We had been waiting too long, so we entered the war. Towards the end of the war Hitler had gone even crazier than he always had been and covered the entire western part of Europe with very heavy defences. That later lead to the invation of Normandy, France. More commonly known as D-Day. After we had restored Europe and the Nazis to sanity, we had to go to the Pacific to do the same there. Only this time the Japanese wouldn't copperate. They would never stop. Thus The Manhattan Project was created. World War II was the worst war of all time when it comes to the aftermath.
